Farm History

Farm History

Beginning in 1894, this labor-intensive way of life has been passed down through five generations of Wilson descendents. Levi Wilson and his son, Charles, raised sheep on the original 134 rolling acres. Charles son, Bruce, took over the farm in the 1930’s raising sheep, hogs, feeder cattle, chickens and producing milk from Holstein cows. Milk production ceased for a time in the 1960’s, but third generation farmer, Dick Wilson, along with his wife Shirley and three daughters, continued to operate the farm raising sheep and Holstein heifers while growing wheat, oats, corn and hay. Daughters Lesa and Lara were interested in 4H projects while LuAnn enjoyed horses, a pony, and gardening on the farm.

Farm Today

Farm Today

Beginning with daughters Lesa and Lara purchasing quality registered Holsteins to raise and show as 4-H projects in the 70’s and 80’s, today’s herd of 80 high quality registered Holsteins descend from these 4-H project animals and select purchased stock. The herd grazes on carefully maintained and managed pasture during the spring, summer, and fall. Cows are comfortably housed during the winter months in the barns. Cows are fed high quality hay and grain, providing a naturally nutritious diet. Animal health and comfort resulting in excellent quality milk production is the top priority. No antibiotics or added growth hormones are ever present in milk marketed from Le-Ara Farms.
